We greatly appreciate our families’ years of support in helping to keep Brookland Cemetery beautiful with your participation in our wreath program. We have unfortunately outgrown the program after the past several years of rapid expansion and are unable to continue to offer our wreath program. We encourage our families to continue to partner with us in maintaining the quality and beauty of Brookland Cemetery by placing your own wreaths on your loved one’s gravesite.

Creations by Barbara (502-955-7557) of Shepherdsville has been our supplier throughout our years of wreath sales and is available for cash and carry holiday wreaths to be placed by families themselves on their loved one’s gravesite.

Wreaths are strongly encouraged to be used as the holiday decoration of choice. There is a height restriction for decorations within Brookland Cemetery. An average sized wreath stand, once placed with legs slightly sunken into the ground to promote stability, is within the 12” height requirement. Wreaths should be placed directly in front of a headstone or if without a headstone then directly at the head of the grave, in line with other monuments in the same row.

When selecting your decorations for winter and the holidays, please keep in mind the 12” height restriction as well as the prohibition of temporary markers of any kind, shepherd’s hooks, glass, wood, ceramics, concrete or iron, for the safety of all visitors to the cemetery. Christmas trees of any kind are allowed only if they fit within a permanent flower vase (a vase which was part of the original design of the monument). Christmas trees will not be allowed as ground decorations at any time in order to avoid any safety issues or create additional maintenance burdens.

Winter/ground decorating runs annually from Thanksgiving Day – March 1. Families both with and without monuments are asked to limit ground decorations to 2-3 small items, which includes a holiday wreath.

As we continue to grow and accommodate additional generations of families within Brookland Cemetery, so too do our needs change, resulting in new or modified rules and regulations. Please know that these changes are made in order to help us continue to maintain the quality and beauty of Brookland Cemetery that you have come to know and appreciate.

Please keep these new/modified regulations in mind as you prepare any fall decorations for the cemetery:

• Effective immediately planting of any kind within the cemetery is not allowed.
• Families waiting for their monument to be delivered are allowed 3 small decorations at the head of their loved one’s grave.
• Winter decorating (non-mowing season) is restricted to 3 small decorations on the ground (in-front of existing monuments) and must abide by decorating policies including the 12” height restriction and the prohibition of the following: temporary markers of any kind, shepherd’s hooks, glass, wood, ceramics, concrete or iron, for the safety of all visitors to the cemetery.
• Families are asked to be mindful of any tokens or decorations left by friends or family that would cause the 3-item limit to be exceeded.
• Please no fresh pumpkins in the cemetery. Fresh pumpkins will be taken up by staff immediately. While a quintessential fall item, they are very difficult to clean up when rotten or broken, potentially leaving an unsightly mess that funeral attendees are forced to navigate while in the cemetery.
• Warning: While holiday themed window clings are not prohibited in the cemetery as a decorating item, they are a damaging material to granite and will leave difficult to remove stains on monuments. Please consult your monument sales person for advice prior to using window clings on your stone.

Brookland Cemetery is pleased to announce that three new upright monument sections have been opened. We have been working diligently to add additional availability to our current plot offerings for families to choose from, for both pre- and at-need purchase. These new sections are all traditional, upright monument sections with prices starting at $1700.00 per plot.

With over 750 new plots, this expansion is intended to accommodate our current families as well as future generations. These new sections will allow families to purchase plots together in large groups as well as the option to purchase plots in close proximity to some of our older, sold-out sections to be close to loved ones already with us at Brookland Cemetery. The three new sections are located on the northern and eastern side of the cemetery, close to the main entrance.

Additional new sections are currently being developed on the western side of the cemetery and are expected to be completed sometime in late 2024.

Brookland Cemetery’s Spring Cleanup begins this Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

As you prepare to decorate for the upcoming season, please be mindful of Brookland’s decorating policies. Specifically pertinent in the springtime are planting rights:

• Families may plant annuals only, all perennials will be removed.
• Plants must be maintained (weeded and watered) throughout the growing season or they will be removed.
• Decorating rights, including any annuals planted, are for the 8” directly in front of the monument only. Decorations and/or plants may not be on either side of the monument or behind a monument. For families waiting for monument delivery, their decoration space is 8” above the grave.
• Only bark mulch is allowed and must be kept to the 8” directly in front of the monument. No other types of mulch (plastic, glass, etc) may be used.

Additionally, to maintain consistency and the beauty of the cemetery as well as ensuring upkeep and necessary maintenance, those families waiting for their monument delivery are asked to limit their decorations to 2-3 small items at the head of their loved one’s grave. Families are asked to be mindful of any tokens or decorations left by others that would cause them to exceed the 2-3 item limit. The cemetery, at its discretion and without notice, will remove any decorations which may create a safety hazard or cause additional maintenance burdens.

We hear so often, typically from the man, “when I am gone, just throw me in a ditch somewhere, I won’t care, I won’t be there anyway”.  We appreciate the sentiment that the person will be in heaven and may not care.  But everyone he loves that is left behind for the moment, grieving his loss, does care very much.Continue Reading..
